Following Theresa May’s Conservative conference speech in Birmingham the Chartered Institute of Public Relations has reported how the PR industry will need to lead on company board shake-ups.
May reported on how ‘too often the people who are supposed to hold big business accountable are drawn from the same, narrow social and professional circles as the executive team’ and ‘too often the scrutiny they provide is not good enough’.
Theresa May announced that later this year they will publish plans to have not just consumers represented on company boards, but workers as well.
Although the final destination point is clear, there is no indication to the journey businesses will need to follow to get to this point.
The CIPR has reiterated the importance of the PR industry playing a role in navigating this elevation of stakeholders to the top level of business management, through internal communications and engagement. PR professionals should be advising businesses and policy makers on how to address the challenges ahead.
