Free childcare expansion news

Latest news suggests that the free childcare expansion, due to be established in September 2017, could disadvantage poorer children.

Education Policy Institute’s latest report warns that the additional 15 hours of free childcare will cut down the number of part-time places available, as there is more demand for the full 30 hours.

There have been a number of concerns about the 30 hours free childcare, including funding rates within settings and whether there will be a sufficient amount of qualified early years staff to meet demand.

The 30 hours expansion is currently being trialled in eight areas and The House of Commons public account committee has recommended that the Department for Education implement any necessary changes in time for the rollout next year.
